Review: ArtRage makes creating natural-looking art easy and fun At a Glance
ArtRage 4.0 $50.00 ArtRage is easy and pleasant to start working with, especially if you have a pen tablet or a touchscreen computer.
Erez Zukerman
Painting is fun. Unfortunately, software for painting often gets a bad rep: I don’t mean image-editing (Photoshop), but actual painting (Microsoft Paint). But Microsoft Paint is at the very bottom of the painting totem pole, often associated squiggly-looking Rage Guy memes. More modern tools like SpeedyPainter and Corel Painter Lite show that creating beautiful, natural-looking art using a computer is possible, and doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. ArtRage joins these accessible tools with its own touch-friendly interface and an attractive $50 price tag. The Symmetry feature makes for interesting paintings that sometimes look like koalas.
Much like Corel Painter Lite and its older sibling, Corel Painter, ArtRage simulates natural media. Paper and brush both have textures; load your brush with paint and draw it across the canvas with one long stroke, and it will gradually fade out. Paint over an area again, and colors will blend, leaving visible brush strokes.
ArtRage’s interface is simple to pick up, with most functions in easy reach. I tested it with a simple stylus and one of the new breed of touchscreen-enabled laptops, the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13. Radial toolbars at the bottom two corners of the screen let me quickly switch tools and adjust colors without fiddling with menus. Other tools show up as floating panels, which are easy to drag and resize using large, comfortable grippers, and automatically wink out of existence as you paint near them. You can pan, zoom, and rotate the canvas with two fingers, making for a very natural workflow. While most of the interface is touch-friendly, it’s not all quite there yet: Adjusting layer opacity still requires the keyboard, for example.
Stencils and rulers make it easy to constrain your work.
Once you get used to the friendly interface and simple tools, it’s time to start playing around with some of the more creative features. Symmetry makes it possible to create interesting, kaleidoscope-like drawings, while stencils and rulers let you constrict your work in interesting ways, for a more accurate, geometric look. Stencils and rulers are made to look like physical objects lying on top of your canvas: You can drag them around and resize them, but they look like pieces of plastic or metal. ArtRage supports layers, too, and you can blur individual layers, adjust their blend modes, change their textures, and more.
When zooming in for detail work, it often helps to keep the big picture in mind. When watching videos made with SpeedyPainter, I noticed just how often artists would zoom in and out, again and again, to get a sense of how the work is progressing. ArtRage helps avoid this by offering a feature called Views. A View works like a little Polaroid snap of your painting that lies on top of your canvas while you zoom in to work on the details. Just like a physical Polaroid, you can drag the View around and rotate it. Unlike its real-world counterpart, you can also change a View’s size, and zoom in or out on its contents. The same concept is used to show pieces of scrap canvas or other files for reference.
Polaroid-like Views of your work keep the big picture in view while zooming in for detail work. ArtRage feels deep and capable, but remains accessible and easy to start with. The attractive price tag doesn’t hurt, either. Like most other painting software, it is usable with a mouse, but shines when used with a pen tablet or a touchscreen. If you’re looking for an affordable and simple way to get into digital painting, try ArtRage out.

Price: $49.90 (£35) Star rating: We rate this 5 out of 5.Star rating Up until recently, the digital painting world was split between those working miracles with Photoshop’s limited tools and those enduring headaches with Painter’s overbearing complexity. When ArtRage arrived it was like a breath of fresh air, and here with version 4 it has stepped up to rival either, more expansive package, for your digital painting needs. ArtRage is like Painter in that it is a proper, natural-media painting package. That means that paint on the paper has depth and mixes with the underlying colour or watercolour spreads and dries on the paper. In terms of what’s new in this version, it’s all about supporting and making best use of tablets and pens, though most features are supported by mouse control as well. There’s bristle stiffness and head aspect control when using the oil paints, colour and brush sizes can be stored as presets, your own colour swatches can be saved and there are coloured canvas patterns. For direct Wacom stylus support there’s new support for the Stylus Tilt, Airbrush Wheel and Art Pen Barrel Rotation, stylus properties can be defined and tools can be assigned to specific styluses.
There are lots of other enhancements, the most notable of which are the paint symmetry options that will help speed up painting by duplicating brush strokes. These include mirroring, adjustable axes and rotation and symmetrical strokes. Although ArtRage is fairly robust there’s now automatic backing up of files when saving so there’s always another copy on hand.
Macworld UK’s 5 Star Rating of ArtRage 4 by Duncan Evans: “Up until recently, the digital painting world was split between those working miracles with Photoshop’s limited tools and those enduring headaches with Painter’s overbearing complexity. When ArtRage arrived it was like a breath of fresh air, and here with version 4 it has stepped up to rival either, more expansive package, for your digital painting needs.” Using a trace layer means that the tool used automatically picks up the colour from underneath, making it easy to create a new image.
If you were hoping for lots of new media brushes then look away, the focus here is on making everything work better. Previously you could pin reference images to the canvas, well now you can pin scraps for colour mixing or making test paintings. There are also independent viewports that can be zoomed and panned and references are easy to drag directly off the canvas when no longer needed. A number of the enhancements are workflow related, so that the workspace can be collapsed to provide a tight, focussed area and there’s a single panel for gathering custom resources. There are some new tools though, with the addition of a cloner, gradient and pattern fills and a noise filter.
If you’ve never used ArtRage before, then the minimalist interface will come as something of a surprise, but it’s all about making the tools easy to use and concentrating on the painting. This release continues that progress making it a compelling, low-cost alternative to the natural media overload of Painter. The oils and watercolours aren’t as sophisticated as Painter, but they are definitely better than Photoshop’s tools, and they do act and react in a natural media fashion. This makes creating those styles of artwork much easier.
Macworld UK’s 5 Star Rating of ArtRage 4 by Duncan Evans: “Up until recently, the digital painting world was split between those working miracles with Photoshop’s limited tools and those enduring headaches with Painter’s overbearing complexity. When ArtRage arrived it was like a breath of fresh air, and here with version 4 it has stepped up to rival either, more expansive package, for your digital painting needs.” There’s support for multiple layers and easily using reference images and scraps of images for test purposes.
Macworld Buying Advice Easy to recommend ArtRage, the latest improvements make it more flexible and powerful. While it isn’t on a par with the tools available in Painter, it has a massively shorter learning time and can be producing excellent results in very little time. With a bargain price as well, ArtRage 4 can sit happily alongside your more expensive software, ready to be picked up and used quickly.

AMBIENT DESIGN RELEASES ARTRAGE 4

Optimized Workflow for Pen Tablets &Touch Screens — New Features Include Symmetry Painting, Clone Tools, & Paint Mixing Scraps

ArtRage 4 for Mac & Windows Adds Numerous Features Requested by Users:  Gradient Fills, Floating Reference Views of Artwork in Progress, and Paint Symmetry

February 13, 2013, San Francisco, CA – Ambient Design www.artrage.com, the award-winning creator of realistic art painting software for Mac, Windows, iPad, and iPhone, released today the new ArtRage 4, a major upgrade of the popular paint software for Mac and Windows, available now for download at http://www.artrage.com/artrage-store.html.

ArtRage 4 offers unique touch-friendly workflow advantages optimized for pen tablet users.  The art creation app takes full advantage of the new Windows 8 multi-touch tablets, laptops, and desktops.  ArtRage 4 not only allows rotation, scale, and movement of the canvas with two fingers, but it can even utilize simple multi-touch gestures with layers, selections, rulers, stencils, stickers and reference images.  Whether using a pen, brush, drawing tablet, mouse or even a finger, ArtRage provides the experience of actually “painting” digitally on a computer canvas with oil paints that smear and blend, and watercolors that flow together to create soft, wet gradations, just as they would in a traditional art studio.

Available immediately for Mac and Windows 8, 7, XP, Vista and earlier computers, tablets, interactive white boards, and touch screens, major improvements in ArtRage 4 include the ability to create “mirrors” that reflect strokes as paint is applied; floating scraps of canvas that can be used like mixing palettes; a Workbench Toolbar; tighter user interface with the essentials for ease of use; improved workflow; better clone and fill tools; optimization for Windows 8, and more.

For a full list of new features, see:  http://www.artrage.com/artrage4.html.

New ArtRage 4 Features Include:

  • Paint Symmetry: Automatically mirrors strokes across the canvas as they are made by reflecting or rotating the path of the tool around a customizable center point.
  • Toolbox Panel:  Make a single interface panel to gather colors, presets, and other items that are relevant to the current painting.
  • Floating Views: Floating windows that display viewports in to part or all of the canvas during painting.
  • Scraps:  Paint on independent, floating scraps of canvas that can be used like mixing palettes or test sheets.
  • Workbench Toolbar: Collapse the entire interface into a single toolbar with customizable space for tools required for the current painting.
  • Front End Redesign: The interface has been restructured and tweaked to improve workflow and clarity.
  • Clone Tool: Clone paint tool with all of its properties across the canvas.
  • Pattern & Gradient Fills: New Fill Tool allows the creation of gradations and tiled pattern fills.
  • Wacom Stylus Property Support: Take advantage of Pressure, Tilt, Barrel Rotation, and the Airbrush Wheel available on some Wacom Styluses. ArtRage also recognizes individual styluses, allowing tools to be assigned to them for quick selection when they are brought back to the tablet.
  • Backup File System: Automatically saves backups of previous generations of paintings to prevent destructive edits deleting old work.
  • Optimized for Windows 8:  Takes full advantage of the new Windows 8 multi-touch tablets, laptops, and computers.

GOSMART LAUNCHES NEW “GOSMART FREEDOM STYLUS”
WITHOUT MAGNETS FOR CLEANER PURE DESIGN

WORLD’S MOST ACCURATE STYLUS FOR IPAD AND OTHER TOUCHSCREEN DEVICES

Stylus & iPad Replace Pen & Paper

Patent-Pending See-Through Tip for Ultimate in Accuracy
Draw, Paint, Write, or Select on Your iPad Just Like Pen & Paper

December 12, 2012, Los Angeles, CA – GoSmart, Inc. www.justgosmart.com announced today the “GoSmart Freedom Stylus” (without magnets), the world’s smoothest, most precise stylus for iPads, touchscreen tablets, smart phones and other devices.  The GoSmart Freedom Stylus (without magnets) is based on the original GoSmart Stylus, which features rare earth magnets to attach the GoSmart Stylus to the iPad smart cover, keeping them together when traveling to meetings, classes, or for other uses – a extremely useful feature.  If you don’t have the smart cover or use an older iPad or non-Apple tablet, then the stylus’ magnets are not needed, which is why GoSmart is today launching the new GoSmart Freedom Stylus (without magnets).

The new streamlined GoSmart Freedom Stylus (without magnets) is perfect for customers who use the Stylus all day (such as professional artists and students), and don’t travel often with their stylus and iPad.  The new GoSmart Freedom Stylus is priced slightly less than the original Stylus, at $23.95, and isavailable immediately.

Like the original GoSmart Stylus, the GoSmart Freedom Stylus comes in two versions:

  • Series 300 “Rocketship” Stylus – looks and feels cool (like a rocket) and stands up with a silicone rubber tip that grabs the smooth curved stylus body.  It comes in red, white, blue and black.
  • GoSmart Series 200 “Pen” Stylus – shaped like a pen, it is more practical for professionals, like doctors, lawyers and business people who want to use the Stylus in a professional setting or for people who are always on the go and need a rigid cap to protect the tip inside backpacks, purses and briefcases.  The cap is made from the same material as bullet-proof glass (polycarbonate) and has a clip so it can go inside a shirt pocket.

No Tapping Noise When Taking Notes – No Clunky Foam or Discs

The GoSmart Freedom Stylus’ Teflon-coated metal tip quietly glides on the iPad or other touchscreen for clear and accurate visibility for a precise touch unimpeded by clunky foam or plastic discs which encumber most other styluses.  Strong and flexible at the same time, the stylus easily pivots to accommodate various hold angles, never scratching your device’s touchscreen display.  And unlike plastic styluses, you won’t hear tapping noises when using the GoSmart Stylus — a key feature for silently taking notes during lectures and meetings.

Patent-Pending Tip with Capacitive Coupling Technology

The GoSmart Stylus provides unique clarity and precision via its patent-pending tip, which employs Capacitive Coupling Technology, the principle that a conductive wire has electric fields extending well beyond the wire itself.  By combining several wire rings, the GoSmart Stylus acts like a solid conductive surface with minimal material, providing a clearer view of the touchscreen display.

The GoSmart Freedom Stylus (withoutmagnets) is available immediately, priced at $23.95 and the original GoSmart Stylus (with magnets) is priced at $24.95.  Both styles areavailable in two ergonomic designs300 Series (rocket-shape style) and 200 Series (pen-shaped style) throughthe GoSmart site at: http://justgosmart.com/store/ or through Amazon.com.  For more information, see the GoSmart website:  www.justgosmart.com YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/user/JustGoSmart?feature=watch Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/JustGoSmart  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/#!/justgosmart.
